
Crispy Fried Okra
Ingredients
- 1 lb fresh okra, trimmed and sliced into 1/2-inch pieces
- 1 cup buttermilk (or milk with 1 tsp vinegar)
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 0.5 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 0.5 tsp black pepper
- 0.5 tsp paprika (optional)
- Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)
Steps
- Heat about 1/2 inch of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Pour buttermilk into a bowl and soak the okra pieces for 5 minutes.
- In another bowl, mix cornmeal, flour, salt, pepper, and paprika.
- Remove okra from the buttermilk, shaking off excess, and dredge in the cornmeal mixture.
- Carefully place coated okra in hot oil and fry 3–4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden and crisp.
- Use a slotted spoon to drain on paper towels.
- Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.
